Rui Chafes * Kapa's Cover (1992)

This is the November 1992 issue of edgy portuguese magazine Kapa ("cover"/ didn't last very long). On the "cover", artist Rui Chafes - it reads: "This man is a genius, he is cute, intelligent and well read. He is 26 years old, has a bride, a motorcycle and a huge talent, his name is Rui Chafes (he should be killed)". Alexandre Melo, in his text for Chafes catalogue "Ash Flowers" (in 2003) wrote - "This is the story of a man who did not die".

(please see post below)

Thank you to João for reminding AND sending me this cover! Share

"My Life as a Dove" by Christian Jankowski

"In My Life as a Dove (1996), Christian Jankowski collaborated with a magician who transformed him into a dove for a duration of three weeks. The message from the magician to the audience was "You're standing in front of Christian's transformation into a dove...be kind to him...and remember that a real artist may sometimes be inscrutable, but a true person as well."

"The master magician Wim Brando transformed Jankowski for the duration of his exhibition in the Antwerp Gallery Lokaal 01 into a dove. The message from the magician to the audience was "You're standing in front of Christian's transformation into a dove. Be kind to him and remember that a real artist may sometimes be inscrutable, but a true person as well." With the aid of the gallery owner, visitors responded to Jankowski as dove, feeding him, taking photos and video documentation and documented his life as a dove in a guestbook. After the three weeks show, the magician came one more time to the gallery and transformed Jankowski back to a man." Share

How Time Out portrayed Portugal in 1984

We were old, cheap, had good wine and great food. That's what the intro says... mmm

Well, some things change...
"Like Soho without the sex shops, it's to the Bairro Alto that you should head most evenings. The whole quarter is packed with tiny restaurants (try Bichano in Rua Atalia), bars and, of course, Casas de Fado. These clubs, which feature the national version of the blues, all make a minimum charge (around 4 to 8 pounds), but in typically reasonable Portuguese fashion this should see you through a good evening's eating and drinking as well as admission."
